Hi, Alx. Just wondering about the crop of healers in N. America evolving out of the spiritual work that people have been doing with your teacher. About eight or ten months ago - not sure just when - you were mentioning that quite a few people had gone to India when you went over last. At the time, you expressed that you believed that there might be, say, 1000 really powerful, well-trained spiritual healers available in the U.S. before too long.

This conversation here on Tribe.net came to mind for me this morning, because I strayed across a request from somebody for healing energy (to be sent at a distance), and I then reflected on how ambiguous and sometimes downright disappointing it can be for one (or often more than one) person to send energy this way - only to learn that there was not much, if any, detectable result. And much as I feel that Reiki substantially changed my life, this disappointing lack of result with distant healing seems all too common in Reiki circles.

So, I felt like checking in for a comment, Alx, re the progress of the group of peope you are working with. Hope this question doesn't 'put you on the spot'... not intended to.

Navaratri: The 9 Divine Nights

"Nava-ratri" literally means "nine nights." This festival is observed twice a year, once in the beginning of summer and again at the onset of winter.

What's the Significance of Navratri?
During Navaratri, we invoke the energy aspect of God in the form of the universal mother, commonly referred to as "Durga," which literally means the remover of miseries of life. She is also referred to as "Devi" (goddess) or "Shakti" (energy or power). It is this energy, which helps God to proceed with the work of creation, preservation and destruction. In other words, you can say that God is motionless, absolutely changeless, and the Divine Mother Durga, does everything. Truly speaking, our worship of Shakti re-confirms the scientific theory that energy is imperishable. It cannot be created or destroyed. It is always there.

Why Worship the Mother Goddess?
We think this energy is only a form of the Divine Mother, who is the mother of all, and all of us are her children. "Why mother; why not father?", you may ask. Let me just say that we believe that God's glory, his cosmic energy, his greatness and supremacy can best be depicted as the motherhood aspect of God. Just as a child finds all these qualities in his or her mother, similarly, all of us look upon God as mother. In fact, Hinduism is the only religion in the world, which gives so much importance to the mother aspect of God because we believe that mother is the creative aspect of the absolute.

Why Twice a Year?
Every year the beginning of summer and the beginning of winter are two very important junctures of climatic change and solar influence. These two junctions have been chosen as the sacred opportunities for the worship of the divine power because:
(1) We believe that it is the divine power that provides energy for the earth to move around the sun, causing the changes in the outer nature and that this divine power must be thanked for maintaining the correct balance of the universe.

(2) Due to the changes in the nature, the bodies and minds of people undergo a considerable change, and hence, we worship the divine power to bestow upon all of us enough potent powers to maintain our physical and mental balance.

Why Nine Nights & Days?
Navaratri is divided into sets of three days to adore different aspects of the supreme goddess. On the first three days, the Mother is invoked as powerful force called Durga in order to destroy all our impurities, vices and defects. The next three days, the Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees the inexhaustible wealth. The final set of three days is spent in worshipping the mother as the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. In order have all-round success in life, we need the blessings of all three aspects of the divine mother; hence, the worship for nine nights.

I'm curious to know if anyone here has read the book "The Shack"? I recently read it because it was written by a local author and I'd heard that god is portrayed as a black woman called papa.

I was moved by the story - there were some pretty profound ideas entertained about surrender, forgiveness, the nature of "god" and religion, etc mixed in with the usual xtian ideas about faith. As I read it I found myself going through an host of emotions - at times resisting ideas I no longer hold "true", at other times stirred to tears by the depth of human suffering addressed, and at still other moments stunned by the insights offered about religious belief systems. It certainly did not convert me back to Christianity but I found in it so many gems equally shared by many other spiritual paths.

I'm wondering if any of you have read it and what you thought of it.

The merits of performing severe tapas, millions of japa and devata pujana are attain by just feeding a hungry person. The person who feeds the needy is like a person who gave them life.

Every single anna (rice ) contain in the food given to the poor and the needy will destroy the sin done in one birth!

The vedaas hail anna (food) as the form of Brahman as it’s the source of life. ( annam bramhethi vyajaanaat)This can be seen in thaitiriya Upanishad

Kanakha rajata paatram medhini sakharantham

Upaya kula vishuddham koti kanya pradaanam

Nahi nahi bahu daanam annadaanam samaapa

The merit obtained by doing one single annadaana cannot be compared even to the daana phala of thousand elephants, horses and cattels, by giving a way thousands of gifts made of gold and silver, by giving the whole land and sea on earth, by conducting kanya daana (wedding) for 1 crore kanyas.

This shows the greatness of annadaana.

Annadaana is a very important part in mantra purascarana . where one has to perform dashamsa homa, dashamsa tarpana and dashamsa annadaana. Without annadaana mantra siddhi is not achieveable and the purascarana is incomplete.the whole benefit of the mantra siddhi is obtained through this annadaana. The reason behind this is, annadaana removes the shortcomings in the purascarana karma and makes it complete.it removes the bakti lobha, mantra lobha and kriya lobha.. And bestows perfection.

Our guruji always say “…. If u ask me whether a person who has done millions of japa and did severe tapas is higher or the person who has fed 100 people in his lifetime….. the answer will be the person who fed the 100 persons”

all the punya phalas promised in the scriptures are attained easily by feeding the poors and the sadhus. Normal persons who don’t know how to do worship, japa etc can get the similar benefit in multiple folds by just feeding the needy and the sadhus.

If u give money to a person he will not be satisfied, if u give gold, vastra etc… still the same…. He will want more…….but he can only eat until his stomach gets full. He himself will say enough and goes home satisfied.

Feeding the sadhus and shiva baktas ia a great blessings for mankind. Its like feeding shiva himself , as they are the human form of shiva. Its very rare to get an opportunity to feed a holy men. If got…. It shouldn’t be missed. Feeding a holy men can remove all our obstacles in life and spiritual path, and it blesses with wisdom. All past karmas are washed away the moment you feed a sadhu. Thats the power of annadaana!

It may take some pretty interesting forms. About 10 years ago, I was listening to our national public radio network, CBC, one morning and heard this brief (5 or 10 minute) audio documentary about a spiritual/energy healer who was on a circuit, going around to various churches in the U.S. & Canada. The fellow specialized in dental problems. In a matter of moments, he was fixing people's teeth! The before-and-after difference could be seen by people in the church and of course felt (and seen in a mirror) by the people he worked on.

pretty interesting adventure, by a former fundamentalist Christian guy who has seriously wanted to know what Jesus did between the ages of 13 and 30, and whether or not the legends that he spent time in India are true.

the mention of an ancient manuscript at the Hemis monastery in Ladakh, India, in the Himalayas -- the Buddhist monks there have it -- sparks a trip there and to other sites in India and Tibet as well.

it's pretty powerful, this film....

I wonder if anyone here has seen it yet, and what you thought?

I'm watching the economy go south, and people getting scared, losing jobs, not sure how they're going to pay their rent and bills. at the same time, it's an age-old principle that loss and heartbreak can be a real vehicle through which to have to connect more to the divine. sometimes we don't think about [insert deity title or euphemism here] until we're really in trouble.

how have the recent economic ups and downs been for you? what do you think about the connection between material upheaval and divine awareness? how is it going... ?

I'd really like to keep a dialogue going about healing (advanced spiritual healing), as the discussions here at Goddessence are the best I've had anywhere, bar none!

Greetings to all here. Many of us have experienced healing through energetic or spiritual means. By “healing” I mean not only healing of our moods and emotions, or our sense of self-worth and wellbeing, but also our physical bodies. I have. And many of us on the Tribe.net spiritual, metaphysical, and bodywork tribes are healers ourselves, in some sense of the word.

After a couple decades of Zen and yoga-meditation, I was attuned to Reiki (back in 2000) and within three years had been attuned to Reiki III. Like many of you, I’ve experienced energy healing and derived great benefit from it at the emotional, connective, and mood levels… and also considerable benefit at the physical level.

Life and identity, skills and abilities all involve levels.

After a lot of communication with spiritual people and healers, after hearing some absolutely astounding & true stories from people I’ve known personally, and after a lot of reading I’ve come to the realization that there are healers practicing at levels far in advance of what I and my friends have generally been involved with. I feel – without any shame or sense of inferiority - like I’m sort of “in the foothills of the Himalayas” but not really up in the heights. So I’m starting this thread because I feel there will be many of us who have arrived at the same realization.

Life is a matter of evolution. There are further heights. There are energies or levels more advanced, more powerful, more effective. I’d like to discuss this on this forum, just because it cannot hurt to be better informed, and because I believe many of us wish to progress a lot in this life.

I’m not a guru, and not on any high horse. I’m an aspirant and a learner, as we all are. Anybody looking for a couple of illustrations of what I’m talking about may go to my profile page and read my blog installment about miraculous healing.

Just wanted to say how much I appreciate the discussion we've been having about advanced healing, in this tribe. And also I wanted to express my appreciation for the people who've participated in the discussion.

I almost titled this post "Why is it so hard?" in reference to the fact that it doesn't seem easy to get any sort of discussion going about the further reaches of healing. I tried to stimulate this sort of discussion on several boards previously, and the whole thing didn't go too far - running out of steam after half a dozen or so posts, at best.

So this board has been refreshing and reassuring to me.

the role of skepticism in spirituality

hi, everybody -- !

jeez, it feels like forever since I've started any thread here.

I've been thinking a lot about healthy skepticism when it comes to spirituality -- especially when evaluating a teacher or a path or a set of teachings. how do you know what's right for you, what isn't right, and whether or not something is true?

it seems to me that unless we have the unfettered chance to ask many questions and weigh the responses we receive in a reasonable way, we're either capable of being ridiculously gullible or of continuing along a given path but being consumed, inside, by huge doubts.

it also says something about faith versus doubt -- where is faith important? where is doubt a total monkeywrench? when does healthy skepticism take a turn for the worse, into perpetual skepticism and cynicism, closed-heartedness and suffering?

what's been the role of skepticism in your spiritual quest or practice?

Ganga Dashami, also referred as Ganga-Dashahara, celebrates the birthday of River Ganga – her descent on earth. The festival begins on the Amavasi day in the Hindu month of Jyestha and ends on the Dashami tithi. The festival lasts for 10 days. In 2008, Ganga Dashahara begins on June 3 and Ganga Dashami date is June 13.

Goddess Ganga Devi is an important deity in Hinduism and bathing in the divine river is the believed to cleanse the sins committed. The ritual of bathing in Ganga is also a way to achieve moksha – the escape from the endless cycles of birth and death.

The festival of great importance in those places through which the Ganges flows especially at Haridwar and Prayag (Allahabad). Ganga is worshipped in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Bengal during this period.

Apart from bathing in the river on the day, people mediate on the banks and recite the prayer dedicated to Ganga:

Self-healing using spiritual/energetic methods

This is a question pitched to Alx... it's sparked by the "Advanced Healing" thread we've had going here in the Goddessence tribe.

Alx, you wrote: "what bugged me about Reiki healings was that they were often successful, or partly successful, and they seemed unpredictable at best. Okay, previously you found healing session to be imprecise and unpredictable. Now I wonder if there was another limitation, too.

You've said that you had experience with Reiki and some other forms of energy healing, and now of course you are working with Sri Kaleshwar's teachings and that approach to healing. And question MAY pertain to all spiritual/energetic healing techniques, or possibly only to Reiki and very similar approaches. It's this: Many of us Reiki-ists (myself included) have found that our ability to use Reiki to fruitfully heal ourselves seems to taper off over time. In other words, we may get tangible and remarkable results in our own self-healing in the first few years, and after that have a disappointing time of trying to further our self-healing process. Our response to Reiki self-healing may become quite sporadic.

I should say that I'm referring to both physical and emotional healing.

I'm sharing this on the basis of having met dozens of Reiki-ists, quite a few Reiki Masters, and having participated in four or five on-line Reiki discussion groups (involving probably at least 100 attuned people - many of them RM's). I don't know if it is always a matter of people taking on the maladies of individuals they've done healing sessions with, because often what the Reiki-ists are dealing with is some old condition or complaint that they've had for many years, even well before they were first attuned to Reiki I.

Is this characteristic of many, or possbly all, spiritual healing methods that we may use? Do we each need to be healed by advanced healers?

particular healing

I wanted to recount an episode from the early years in India, when a woman came to my teacher and asked him if he could heal the relationship between her and her mother. it had been acrimonious for years, her mother was elderly, and this woman was worried that she and her mom would never mend it before her mother passed away.

he asked her to take a handful of sand, and then to think deeply about her mother and their relationship.

the woman complied, scooped up a handful of sand from the floor of an ancient temple, and held it there.

when she opened her hand, all the sand was gone and a small gemstone was there in its place.

he told her -- 'go give this to your mother, and see what happens.'

the lady protested, 'but I'm not even sure my mother would accept anything from me -- it's so bad between us that we barely even talk to one another.'

he grinned, and urged her, 'just try.'

she got home to America a few days later, and called her mom to tell her she'd 'gotten' something for her mom in India.

her mother was completely touched that the daughter had thought about her during her India trip, and happily received the gemstone from her.

their relationship turned into a loving one, and has been strong for years now.

to me, it's a pointed demonstration about how the miraculous energy can undo karmas in an instant; particular exact knots of suffering accrued from who knows when or what lifetime, even, that are still torturing people through their relationships.

in that act of manifesting the small gemstone -- in the woman's hand who was asking for the healing, not in the master's hand! -- he used his connection to the divine to wipe away years of fighting and misunderstanding between mother and daughter, and to let the daughter know, as well, that the miracle capability was (literally) within her grasp...! *grinning*

I think it's important to know that each of us has this capacity, if we're willing to do the work to research and practice the channels it takes to gain such healing abilities -- and that huge unnecessary suffering can be alleviated through god's energy, specifically, being implemented through particular doorways into this creation.

Shantaram and its author

hi, all --

I've been reading this fantastic novel called Shantaram, written over a multi-year period by an extraordinary Australian man who was a junkie and a criminal (imprisoned for a 17-year sentence for armed robbery) -- he escaped Australian prison and went on the run, wound up living in Bombay, India, and living in the underworld there (finally, mafia, gun-running, passport forgery, etc.) until being caught again and sent back to Australian prison. he spent years writing the novel based in his own experiences....

the book is luminous -- the writing is like Pat Conroy, Victor Hugo, or Henry Miller: transcendent, hilarious, painful, honest, and the characters are some of the finest I've ever met in a novel. good, evil, crime, violence, human dignity, joy -- it's all there. plus, the portrayal of India is phenomenal -- you can smell the streets, from the diesel to the spices, in his writing.

all the way through, the love and the humanity melts your heart at every turn.

Sankalpa

What does the term sankalpa mean when put in the context of an avatar. What does it mean when an avatar or mahatma tells you that he/she will make a sankalpa for you? Does it mean that he/she will change your karma? That's what I understand.

I was in a situation 4 months ago and asked such an avatar, stupid me didn't realize that She said She's make a sankalpa for me until 2 days ago....She actually said sankalpa, but my mind couldn't accept it...don't ask me why, I don't know, my mind does funny things in front of my guru. Funny thing is the situation is now a moot point. I don't expect anyone to have the answer to this, but I'm putting it out there in hopes of learning something.

I've had some interesting experiences with them and some of the excercises I still use in some of my meditations. I particularly like the way they have defined states of mind and meditative states.

The way to god

He is the mother behind all mothers, he is the father, he is the only friend behind all friends, HE IS, and YOR ARE made in his very image, literally.

See him in everything and everything will become him.

That’s what Jesus meant by saying: "I and the Father are one." (John 10:30)

You are also a potential son of god just as Jesus is, and all avatars and every creature existing in that great motion picture of god (Maya) are. The only difference between you (maybe not you) and Jesus is the level of realization of that truth.

We are just playing the human game; but acknowledging that we are a divine being, all we have to do is to realize that in practice.

How to realize?

There are many ways that leads to god, but only one goal (god). Concentrate on the goal and the way will show up. But if concentrating only in the ways, we may lose the goal.

Follow your intuitive internal guidance, choose your way, fell connected with your internal god of love, and go ahead.

As Paramahansa Yogananda says: “If you read one hour, then write two hours, think three hours, and meditate all the time”

First know god and from his “lips” you will understand the whole creation. And then joy, joy, eternal celebration of inexhaustible joy and eternal over bliss will be present forever.

But before that, every word will be just dust in the wind. (As the song)

I (AS EGO) am only one more little dust in this perishable wind that will vanish with all illusion, until finally I become one with all.

How do I know that ???

During meditation

Have anyone here experienced the state of meditation, when suddenly in the moment that you go deep inside yourself and lose the identification with the self consciousness, feeling as you are entering in a kind of the deep sleep state but with the consciousness awake yet without any thought. Then at that moment a kind of conscious jump happens and something frightens you, as a new event is going to happen but you don’t know what it is, and at that instant you come back to conscious state. Is that usual to happen during meditation, what to do then and what is that?

LOST IN KNOWLEDGE

Spiritual knowledge is very important in the search for self-realization, without that we do not have the first glimpses to start our journey to god-realization. Yet, LOVE is the propellant dynamo that impulses that knowledge to reach the goal.

The danger about knowledge is that, it should be used only as a right potion, until work starts. That is, just in the quantity enough that will lead us to start the journey for self-realization.

I have seen so many intelligent seekers whom know about all the spiritual issues. They can talk for hours about any guru, any spiritual path, and any line of realized master and so on...

They can explain all particularity differences between many kinds of Samadhi, Satore, Nirvana and so on. Nevertheless, they have not experienced any one of then.

That is why many realized masters use to incentive the disciple only meditate and pray to god to revealing himself.

God is the owner of all knowledge, and if you know him and become One with him, you will know not only about many spiritual theories, but about all that exists in this dream universe and also far, far beyond that.

That’s why at that time Jesus answered and said:

(Matthew 11:25)- I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.

Be a babe does not mean be a full, means be fully surrendered to the god within. And for that reason that great master said also:

“Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and ALL these things shall be added unto you." (Matthew 6:33)

More about Amma’s Farmer Relief Project:

Due to economic pressures leading to irresolvable debt associated with continually failing crops, many farmers have been committing suicide by drinking the very pesticides that no longer work on their crops. Especially in South India, where the growing rise of climate changes and other factors, crop failure has become more and more common causing suicide to spread like an epidemic amongst the suffering farmers. For example, in 2006 in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra alone, there were 1,044 reported suicides – one every eight hours.

In the spring of this year, after discussions on the issue with Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Amma found herself pledging 43 million dollars to address this problem. She admitted later the large dollar amount she had pledged surprised her, but in the moment she had felt drawn to offering at least that much to help the situation. As part of the pledge, Amma offered that the MA Math would launch a massive project to provide aid and hope for the future for these struggling farmers.

“The problem cannot be solved through economic packages alone,” Amma told the Maharashtra CM. “What is needed is social and spiritual interventions so that the farmers realize that suicide is not the way out. In fact, it only further aggravates the problem for the families.” Feeling immense compassion for their suffering due to their unfortunate circumstances, Amma felt counseling and education could really help them get through to the other side.

On September 27 2007, the Ashram inaugurated two programs responding to this dire situation: Vidyamritam and Amrita SREE. These projects focus aid on the places with higher farmer suicide rates – Maharastra, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. These two initial relief projects are aimed at lessening the financial strain placed upon such agricultural families.

Vidyamritam - Educational Scholarships

Through Vidyamritam, the Ashram is providing full scholarships for free education to 100,000 children (ages 10 to 15) of farmers living below the poverty line. Many of the beneficiaries are in fact children who have lost one or both parents to suicide. The children receive a monthly stipend until they finish their education, subject to their performance in their studies.

Since the announcement of the project, thousands of applications have been received and they continue to pour in daily. Because of the huge response, the number of beneficiaries continues to grow.

As an extension to this project, the MA Math is conducting awareness programs to inculcate life skills for personality development. A newsletter containing articles, stories and discussion forums to further facilitate the intellectual and mental growth is also being received by all the children. Furthermore, special advanced-education camps and symposiums on environmental preservation are being conducted.

Amrita SREE (Self-Reliance Education & Employment)

Through Amrita SREE, the Ashram is providing free vocational training to 5,000 different groups of women from impoverished agricultural families. Though many of these women have now incurred their husband’s debt due to suicide, the MA Math has been supporting them in building their own businesses through vocational training in various fields, including tailoring, making snacks for small scale industries, electrical repair, and making paper products. After completion of their training, the women are given the necessary start-up capital to begin small, home based businesses.

Millions of Women Gather to Worship The Goddess

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, INDIA, February 21, 2008: Women in thousands have started pouring in to participate in the famous gathering at Attukal temple, one of the world's biggest female congregations. The Attukal Bhagavati temple entered the Guinness Book of World Records two years back as a religious event that draws over a million women on a single day.

The whole city will turn into a sea of women when the sun rises, with the road, pavements and by-lanes about an area of six kilometers around the temple being occupied by devotees with the earthen pots placed on brick hearths in front of them to prepare the "prasadam" (sweetened pudding). The ritual consists of preparation of the prasadam of rice, jaggery, coconut and spices, to be offered to Devi to invoke her blessings for peace and prosperity.

The Temple Trust authorities said 2.5 million devotees were expected
this year.

So when the musician Moby was singing “we are all made of stars” did you take him literally? Do you remember as a child how you thought there where infinite universes within your body and that our universe was smaller than atom in some other world!

Well the truth is that we are indeed all made of stars and when the masters stated “as above so below their we're pointing to the fact that what we see in the heavens is what is below us i.e. There are infinite universes within every atom. I suppose you'll now want some proof? OK the video clip below although sometimes tedious will prove to you beyond doubt that there are infinite universes expanding outward as well as inward. Our speaker, Gordon Plummer, also unlocks some of the secrets of religion and mysticism.

this fascinating article is a great exposition of one of the aspects of spirituality and enlightenment I've been studying for nearly a decade, now, -- Vaastu. Vaastu is the ancient Vedic knowledge that preceded Feng Shui, relating to architecture and room placement in homes, offices, holy places, and other buildings. it has to do with how the Five Elements (earth, fire, sky, water, and air) correlate and interact with the 4 cardinal directions and subdirections.

although the vaastu I study, practice, and consult on is slightly different (and more thorough) from the one detailed below (Maharishi's system), this article does a great job of talking about the importance -- materially, for sure, but also, indirectly, spiritually -- of understanding something about this ancient science.

Vedic architecture – the power of life-giving principles

On October 25, 2003, a fire began near the mountain town of Ramona in San Diego County, California. Fueled by acres of dry brush and fanned by strong Santa Ana winds, the Cedar Fire spread rapidly, burning 273,246 acres, destroying 2,232 homes, and killing 14 people. According to Jeff Harter, battalion chief of the California Fire Plan, California Department of Forestry, the speed and ferocity of the blaze "were heart stopping."

Jeanette Worland watched the fire approach across the hills, while her husband, Paul, hosed down the new home he had designed and built according to the principles of Maharishi Vedic Architecture. Pushed by 40 to 60 mph winds, the fire roared up to their home around midnight, then made a sudden 90 degree shift and passed directly outside of the house's Vastu fence. This sudden shift allowed the Worlands to evacuate – and it saved the house and everything in or near it. After shifting the blaze away from the house, minutes later the wind shifted back to its original direction and consumed the acreage directly behind the home.

The astonishing jog of the fire around the house was confirmed the next day by two fire fighters who noted with amazement that the fire seemed to lack the "desire" to destroy this house. Five other Maharishi Sthapatya Ved houses located within the fire’s path were similarly spared with only smoke damage. One of the five was the only house among several in a cul-de-sac not to burn.

Fast forward to this year’s recent devastation. The Worland’s and several other people’s Sthapatya Ved houses were spared again against all odds. What happened?

Miracles are considered the result of divine intervention. But miracles have also been defined as occurrences which seem inexplicable because the laws governing them are so subtle they have not yet been discovered. In the case of these six homes, the miracle of their preservation depended upon principles that had been discovered, only many thousands of years ago in India.

Vedic architecture, or Vastu architecture, also known as Sthapatya Veda, is a system of architecture and city planning based in cosmic principles that was learned by the great Indian rishis and then recorded thousands of years ago in the texts of the Vedas. The Sanskrit word Sthapan means to establish. The Sanskrit word Veda means knowledge of Natural Law. As such, the system of Vedic architecture, which is still practiced and taught in India today, applies eternal cosmic principles to the built environment in which we work and dwell.

In the West, His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi studied the Sthapatya Vedas for many years, compiling and organizing much information that had apparently been lost and disorganized over the centuries. His system, called Maharishi Vedic architecture, Maharishi Vastu, or Maharishi Sthapatya Ved design, is taught today. It was the system by which all six homes that survived the Cedar Fire were designed and built.

Is it possible that the architectural design, based in life-giving principles of the cosmos, imbued the homes with a "grace" that sustained them even in the face of certain destruction?

Maharishi Sthapatya Ved

According to Jonathan Lipman AIA, owner of Jonathan Lipman AIA and Associates in Fairfield, Iowa, and director of the Institute of Maharishi Vedic architecture, Maharishi Vedic architecture is defined as "the most complete and ancient system of architecture and planning on Earth in accord with the solar, lunar and planetary influences on Earth with respect to the South Pole, North Pole and equator, connecting individual intelligence with cosmic intelligence, individual life with cosmic life."

This may sound "far out," but anyone with a high school diploma knows there are laws of nature that govern all the structures of nature – the galaxies, solar systems, stars, planets, animal life, plant life, cells, atoms, and subatomic particles. From the micro to the macro there are laws of nature that maintain perfect harmony and order in relationships throughout all creation.

Once you start looking, it’s obvious that these principles exist, and it’s not only the Indian rishis who have recognized them. Artists, philosophers, and scientists such as Leonardo de Vinci, Plato and Copernicus have developed entire astronomical, philosophic and artistic schools around the perfection of mathematical proportion, perspective and the cosmos. But it is in the Vedas where the science of mathematical and structural harmony and cosmic influences has reached the highest practical level as applied to the built environment.

"Our houses, our buildings, our cities are the intermediaries between us and the cosmos, the natural universe," says Lipman. "Man-made environments affect quality of life and create predicted influences on the lives of the people who live in and use our buildings."

Lipman points out that some of the great Renaissance architects used proportion, as created by sacred geometry based in the mathematical spiraling Fibonacci series, as did the more modern Le Corbusier. He says today architects recognize that some buildings have great and inspiring influences that affect the success, health and wellbeing of the people who live and work in them, and that other buildings have the opposite effect. But except for being taught abstract geometric analysis, they’re not taught why the structure has an impact. Worse, the importance of using the principles to consciously create a harmonious environment is completely disregarded.

"If you hire an architect to design a house," says Lipman, "you should be able to say to them, ‘Mr. Architect, you've been designing houses for 20 years. Will you give me the statistics on the health and success of the families who've lived in your houses?’ But we don't think to ask these questions. And architects don't think to keep statistics, because the assumption is that we don't know what the rules are, so it’s all completely hit and miss. And that's a pretty terrible state of affairs. It would be intolerable in most disciplines."

According to Sthapatya Ved, the three most important influences of a building on human life are the influences of orientation, which is the direction something faces; placement within a building or a city, where certain activities take place; and proportion. There are ideal directions in which to cook, sleep, study, pray or meditate, and create. For example an Eastern orientation is preferred for the placement of bedrooms, because the first rays of the sun's light in the morning are the most "awakening" on the planet. Throughout the course of the day, the qualities of sunlight change – from the gentle clarity of the morning sun, to the overhead glare of mid-day, to the heating, penetrating rays of the western sun. Rooms and activities are oriented to take advantage of the appropriate qualities of sunlight as they change.

Although direct scientific research supporting Vedic architectural principles is scarce, there is some. For example, cells in rat’s hippocampal formations are known to discharge as a function of the animal's head direction in the horizontal plane. Recent studies now indicate that migratory birds may actually "see" Earth’s magnetic lines of force, processing the information through the thalamus to orient themselves appropriately. In humans, orientation tuning and other visual functional-response properties of organisms are controlled by the thalamus, which also plays a major role in regulating arousal, the level of awareness and activity.

"The neurons in the thalamus operate at different intensities depending upon which directions we are facing," says Lipman. "If we turn away from a direction, certain neurons in the thalamus fire more weakly and can cease entirely."

Most interesting is the results of a study done at a hospital in Italy. A group of scientists lead by F. Beneditti published "Morning sunlight reduces length of hospitalization in bipolar depression" in a scientific, peer-reviewed journal in 2001. In this study, bipolar inpatients were housed in two sides of a hospital wing, one east-facing, the other west-facing. All other elements of the patients’ environment, food, schedule, staff, furniture, cleaning products, etc, were identical. Patients "in E rooms (exposed to direct sunlight in the morning) had a mean 3.67-day shorter hospital stay than patients in W rooms," writes Benedetti.

There are many factors at work in the creation of a building aligned with principles of Vastu Science, and their importance is slowly making inroads in the West. Feng shui, a derivative of Sthapatya Ved, is probably the best known similar building methodology currently used in the U.S. With the increase in interest, some architects are going to the source.

Michael Borden, AIA, was so intrigued by the potentials that he went to India and studied under Vastu architect Ganapati Sthapati, whose direct lineage built the great temple at Tanjore in the 10th century. Borden explains there are many ancient texts with thousands of pages that dictate in detail the design necessities of buildings in general as well as specifics. "In one text, the Mayamata," says Borden, "some of the chapter headings are as follows: Dwelling sites, Examination of the Site, Taking possession of the Site, System of measurements, Orientation, Offerings, Towns, Number of Stories and the Dimensions, The Foundation Deposit, The Base, Dimensions of Pillars and Choice of Materials, Entablature, Joinery.

"My experience was that to digest, assimilate and apply the information in these texts was a discouraging chore. I began studies with Ganapati Sthapati hoping that he would act as an interpreter and filter of the knowledge for me and this he did. I came away from my studies with a balanced and applicable body of knowledge."

Although not familiar with the Maharishi Sthapatya Ved system, the basic principles Borden was taught, outlined on his website vastu-design.com [1]align with Lipman’s. Both architects also stress the importance of laying out a building according to an earth energy grid, siting a residence in alignment with the owner’s birth time, the specific placement of entry doors, and the necessity of a Brahmastan, or central courtyard.

"It is the energy heart of the house," says Borden. "It is the lung of the house. This part of the house should always be left open and free of obstructing elements (pillars or walls) and mechanical services. It is best if this portion, at least, is directly in contact with the Earth. It is traditional, where climate permits, to leave the Brahmastan open to the sky so that the energetic space surrounding the Earth is attracted into the house."

Where heaven and earth meet

The vastu home, as reflected through the intentional creation of the central Brahmastan, is the place where heaven and earth meet. There are no particular styles or building materials required. While Vastu architecture traditionally builds with a 10,000 year life-span in mind, and stone and marble are often seen as preferential, Vastu houses and commercial structures can be as traditional looking as needed. However, whether modern, colonial, Craftsman, or western ranch-style they all have a beauty and a "feel" about them that is distinct and noticeable.

"People who have subtle perceptions of these sorts of things have very clear experiences when they come into these houses of a certain kind of coherence," says Lipman. "Using the laws of nature … we can create predicted influences on the lives of the people who live in and use our buildings. And this is real, and it is measurable, and this is palpable and once you’ve tasted it yourself, if you have enough compassion you want everyone in the world to have it."

As far as advice to people who are interested in applying Vedic principles to their current environments, Lipman recommends three things: 1) acknowledge that the environments we spend time in have a very real influence on us and be aware of that. 2) Gather information about what will be most beneficial, and act on the information. "If you’re going to spend 90% of your time in buildings, which we do, be sure it's an East or North facing building. And if you live in a house and it's not east or north facing, see what you can do to close up the south or west doors and use east or north doors. Sleep with your head to the east or the south. Do these two things and don't take my word for it, see what your experience is."

And number three? Approach architecture as a totally integrated system and reap the benefits. "I can only hope that one day all of your readers are living in Vedic buildings," he says.

cool synchroniicty ( a chain of events!)

I was at a retreat this past weekend eating dinner with a few people I had never met before when one woman at the table turns to another and says "are you BengalIi?" The woman answers "yes how do you know". The woman inquiring says "I recognize the accent" . Then i ask if Bengal is now a part of another country outside of india since i was reading a book on Anandamayi Ma and it said although she was Bengali her birthplace was now considered another country. Obviously geography is not my forte. so then they say "you mean Bangalore". The Bengali woman says are you reading "Mother of Bliss"?" and i say yes and i 'm really enjoying it and it such a great book etc. then she tells me she knows the author because they have been corresponding by email for some time and are internet freinds and know people in common. Then i get up to get more dinner and when i come back the woman who started the conversation says oh "Lisa and i are great freinds. I didn't realize that you were talking about Lisa because i always call her by her spiritual name Prajna." so we all go outside and she calls her and we all end up passing the phone around and talking to her. So we are three strangers on a retreat in michigan , all three of us sit down as strangers and we all end up being connected to Lisa Lassell Halstrom and Anadamayi Ma and we only find out because i asked a random question about geography! If i wouldn't have asked that question we would have all had a nice dinner and never had the opportunity to find out that out of three people at the table one was reading the book, one was corresponding with the author and the other is intimate freinds with her. I thought it was cool!

What will the holidays bring? While you might be looking forward to visiting with family, stress and conflict maybe often a part of the mix. The latest research on stress shows that short term stress is actually good for your immune system. I guess that confirms the old saying, "whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger". Conflict can help you clarify your values, to stand up for what you believe in. Stress can be energizing, can help you accomplish what you need to in the world...but how much stress? how much conflict? Long-term stress is what makes us sick. So how do you know when to put on the brakes, to stop saying "yes" to extraneous commitments, to stop engaging in unnecessary conflict (not that that is an option necessarily one wishes to attract just by mentioning it (no-no-no).... So, harmony may very well be part of your (my) journey as we want to invite harmonious and smooth spiritual growth?

These aren't new questions, they have been asked for centuries. As the end of 2007 approaches, you may be taking stock, looking at what has transpired and what is to come, defining new samkalpas (resolutions) and perspectives, and reflecting on the meaning of inner and outer peace.

I for myself will be going to a retreat to get away from it all, be at ease and get new inspirations. Good company matters a lot for they increase immunity and hence spiritual well-being.

This seems like such a wonderful thing to do, at this time when there is so much strife and violence in the name of religion. Having these folks agree to sit at the same table - even metaphorically speaking, through the film - moves me deeply. By helping to break down the walls of intolerance, and revealing the common ground of all religions, this film could be a part of bringing peace to our world.

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 16, 2007: Senate Resolution 299, recognizing the "religious and historical significance of the festival of Diwali," passed unanimously on November 14, 2007 in the U.S. Senate. Nearly identical to the House Resolution 747 that passed in the full House of Representatives on October 29, 2007, the senate resolution was introduced by Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and was co-sponsored by Senators Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Carl Levin (D-MI), Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Robert Casey (D-PA). Both resolutions were written with the input of the Hindu American Foundation (HAF), and recognized Diwali as a festival celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs. The text explains the meaning of the festival, how it is celebrated and describes its religious significance.

"I am delighted that the Senate has agreed to pass this resolution to recognize the religious and historical significance of the festival of Diwali," said Sen. Menendez. "It is important that we celebrate the great diversity that makes up and strengthens our national fabric, and it gives me great pride to commemorate what Diwali stands for -- a time to be with family, and to pray for health, knowledge, and peace."

The Board of Directors of the HAF, Mihir Meghani, M.D., Nikhil Joshi, Esq. and Aseem Shukla, M.D. released a joint statement lauding the resolution and welcomed their passage as a testament to the increase in understanding of Hinduism and Hindu Americans that has occurred among U.S. policy makers and elected officials since HAF's inception four years ago.

"These resolutions are symbolic, but we hope that the momentum of this event--where hundreds of legislators voted to recognize a Hindu festival--will inspire Hindu Americans everywhere to work towards Diwali's recognition at the state level, having the festival listed on more calendars, and taking the opportunity to spread awareness of their faith and its festivals at their schools and places of work," the statement read. "The Hindu American Foundation's focus is on educating people who shape public opinion and public policy in America about Hinduism and issues of concern to Hindu Americans, and these votes show the success we have had the past few years." They specifically thanked Sen. Menendez, and the co-sponsors of the Senate resolution, for their commitment to the Hindu American community and for encouraging their colleagues to support the resolution.

The passed resolutions have already been distributed at several Hindu temples and at Diwali celebrations throughout the country, according to the Foundation, and these efforts will continue. The HAF Board also congratulated today the determined and persistent efforts of their Director of Public Policy, Ishani Chowdhury, whose efforts on Capitol Hill were specifically recognized by Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) in a statement after H.Res 747 passed the House of Representatives. The Director of Development and Outreach, Sheetal Shah, also was in touch with several congressional offices obtaining Diwali greetings and increasing support for the resolutions. Shah recently completed a highly successful Diwali capital campaign--a time when many Hindus contribute to causes they feel deserving of support.

The burning times - witchhunts in the 17th century

The witchhunts, the burning times are an abomination unto European history and our collective consciousness. However is is a ground of much unquestioned assumption and heresay. This little post is to hopefully bring discernment over some aspects of the matter.

Part of the 'new dogma' of neopagan spirituality is the assertion that 5 million women were burnt alive in Europe during the witchhunts. Surprisingly, this idea is not founded in any evidence but ,rather, a deep and essentially contemporary outrage in the collective consciousness toward tyranical oligarchy (for 'patriarchy' - as if every man were implicated - but I argue the problem is more a form of tyranny where political power effectively rests with a small elite segment of society) - which is often attributed in some way to Christianity .

The body of evidence around the witch hunts leads to a bit of a different take on events, where it is neccesary to again OWN the shadow of our human nature rather than projecting it upon an external authority 'doing it to us'.

The earliest reference to 9 million witches burnt is from 'the witchcraft museum' .In 1951 the owner Cecil Williamson had put up a memorial to "the estimated nine million people killed during the witch persecutions in Europe." There is no source of evidence anywhere giving any figure remotely close to this. "Cecil Williamson simply made it up. " (Hinds, 2006)

* The total number of Europeans killed is generally thought to be 40,000 to 100,000, not 5 million.

* Depending on european country, between 20 to 90% percent of the accused tried for witchcraft were men.

* The trials were not run by churches of any denomination. They were largely held in civil courts and prosecuted by local authorities

* In France, Germany, Switzerland, and Scotland, almost all of the accused were executed were garroted before the flames were lit. In England most convicted witches were hung and not all of them were put to death.

* The judicial records indicate a mainly provincial and vindictive character to the 'witch hunts', much as how people are scapegoated or sacrificed in indigenous cultures for illness or bad luck.

"Most of the complaints concerned pregnant women, infants, young children and lactating mothers who suffered from unexplained and sometimes fatal maladies. Such misfortunes were commonplace at a time when only half of all babies made it past their first birthday. If the mother or her family felt inclined to blame this on supernatural forces, the most likely culprit to single out would be an elderly woman who had some encounter -- even a seemingly benevolent one -- with mother or child."

"Current popular history holds that the witch hunts were concerted campaigns by a male-dominated church that felt its sway diminished by stubborn pagan and folk traditions that gave too much respect to wise old women. The persecution, the story goes, was designed to stamp out those beliefs. However, when you look at actual cases, the picture is quite the opposite. "In 1627," writes Roper, "in the town of Ochsenfurt, rumors about witchcraft had involved the allegation that a child had been eaten ... Later that same year, 150 citizens gathered in force to complain about 'the enemies of their livelihood, and vermin and witchcraft,'" and to demand action. Against the bishop's express orders, the mayor and council arrested and tortured several suspects, causing the death of one."

This picture, of waves of local hysteria triggered by the death of a loved one, especially a child, leading to scapegoating by the execution of marginals, is very sad indeed, and it is a scenario, a human behaviour pattern still playing out across the planet to this day, from the social ex-communication of unique people or 'outsiders' in schools and colleges, to the scapegoating of entire nations on account of resource wars. Humans urgently need to look at their still undeveloped pattern of scapegoating and sacrifice instead of assuming that this behaviour has its roots in a particular creed or historical context.

Thoughts About the True Miracle in the Andes

Exactly 35 years ago today, a horrific and extraordinary chain of events was set in motion high in the Andes above Chile. A small commuter plane carrying 45 people crashed on Friday, October 13, 1972. For the next two months, a group of survivors of the crash, most of whom were the young members of a Uruguayan rugby team called the "Old Christians," kept themselves alive against all laws of nature, physics and reason. Like many, you are probably familiar with this story because of its more gruesome details, some of which - namely that the survivors ate the flesh of the dead in order to stay alive - were obsessed over and sensationalized in media for months after the rescue, and then again in the early 1990s when Frank Marshall directed a film called "Alive" (based on Piers Paul Read's book). If you saw the film or read the book, you will recall that one of the primary characters on the mountain was a man named Nando Parrado. Nando says in his own book, "Miracle in the Andes" (published in 2006), that he was not a man of any particular leadership skill or quality at the time of the crash, but nonetheless, over the course of the two months following the accident, he emerged as the key figure in the salvation of the other 15 survivors.

Nando was the driving force behind an expedition out of the mountains (which he undertook along with medical student Roberto Canessa) to get the group rescued after 60 days of surviving freezing temperatures, altitude sickness, a crushing avalanche (which killed eight of their companions in a matter of minutes), starvation, thirst, grief, despair and the horror of being witness to their own slow deaths. Nando and Roberto walked for 11 days over a 17,000-ft peak and across more than 60 miles of ice, snow, and rock with nothing but the street clothes they had packed for a weekend vacation and the will to live.

When Nando came to SUNY Brockport last month to speak to students, he had an audience of more than 1,500 (the largest I've seen there by a scale of three times). Before he left the stage, he had been given three standing ovations, each of which lasted well over a minute. I was very fortunate to get to spend some time with Nando after his talk, and he graciously allowed me to ask him anything I wanted to know about his experience in the Andes. After some discussion of things like his relationships with the other survivors, how he has been able to not let the disaster be the most important thing in his life, and what he learned on that mountain about himself and human beings, I came to realize that what was most fascinating to me about Nando was not the tragedy or even that he had had the amazing luck to survive such an ordeal. What is most extraordinary about Nando is that he has taken an experience that might destroy most of us, and instead of defining himself as a victim, he has chosen to use his survival as an opportunity to embrace life fully and to show others how to do that as well. He spends many months traveling each year to talk to audiences all over the world about his experiences. But he doesn't lecture them on "leadership" or "teamwork" or "courage." He talks to them simply and candidly about how he learned that love is the only sane reaction to horror and death. He credits his will to survive - indeed, his survival itself - to his love for his father. It's interesting, because although he always packs the room, I get the feeling that Nando doesn't fully understand why people respond to him the way they do. He perceives that he is made into a hero for his actions (which is probably true in the case of some people), and more powerfully (and correctly) that his story resonates with people because it demonstrates to them that anything can be endured and overcome. But I think the most significant reason that people respond so strongly to Nando is not just because of what he endured, but because he reminds us that even in the most hopeless of situations, we still have a choice. At its core, Nando's story demonstrates that we always have a degree of control over our lives, even if that choice is simply defining the terms under which we die. This phenomenon is much more than hopefulness or optimism; it is the manifestation of human agency. It is the essence of empowerment.

There is a quote from Nando's book where, after being on the mountain for more than two months, enduring the deaths of 29 friends and family members (including his mother and sister), and upon reaching the summit of a 17,000-foot peak in 30-below-zero temperatures in jeans and sneakers, expecting to see green valleys below, he only sees more peaks and snow-filled valleys as far as the eye can see.

Nando writes:

I don't know how long I stood there, staring. A minute. Maybe two. I stood motionless until I felt a burning pressure in my lungs, and realized I had forgotten to breathe. I cursed God and raged at the mountains. The truth was before me: For all my striving, all my hopes, all my whispered promises to myself and my father, it would end like this. We would all die in these mountains. We would sink beneath the snow, and ancient silence would fall over us, and our loved ones would never know how hard we had struggled to return to them. In that moment, all my dreams, assumptions and expectations of life evaporated into the thin Andean air. My love for my father swelled in my heart and I realized that, despite the hopelessness of my situation, the memory of him filled me with joy. It staggered me. The mountains, for all their power, were not stronger than my attachment to my father. They could not crush my ability to love. I felt a moment of calmness and clarity, and in that clarity of mind I discovered a simple, astounding secret: Death has an opposite, but the opposite is not mere living. It is not courage or faith or human will. The opposite of death is love. How had I missed that? How does anyone miss that? Only love can turn mere life into a miracle and draw precious meaning from suffering and fear. For a brief, magical moment, all my fears lifted and I knew that I would not let death control me. I would walk through the godforsaken country that separated me from my home with love and hope in my heart. I would walk until I had walked all the life out of me, and when I fell, I would die that much closer to my father.

In that moment, when he accepted his own death as inevitable and impending, Nando made what must have seemed to him a tiny choice, but which had enormous consequences. Although he was sure that he would never see home again, he chose to refuse the path of least resistance. Instead of lying down in the snow and waiting for death to come to him (as he had pondered doing on many occasions during those two months), Nando elected to continue walking. He understood in that moment that the fear of death was the real horror. In making that split-second choice to take one more step, to breathe in and out one more time, Nando conquered that fear and discovered a reserve of spiritual resilience that he believes (as I also do) is accessible to everyone. Nando's transformational experience on that summit is not unlike what Buddha or Gandhi or other great spiritual leaders have described. Although he didn't know it at the time, in choosing to continue walking, Nando not only saved his own life and those of 15 other men, but he pulled all of us one step further down the road of human evolution.

NAVARATHRI (9 Days Of Mother Divine) CELEBRATIONS!!!

Navarathi is an incredibly auspicious time of the year, according to the Vedic tradition. It is the Nine Days of The Mother Divine -- a nine-day festival (culminating in the 10th day) during which the three top aspects of the Mother Divine are celebrated, connected with, and come together to form the peak form of Mother, Maha Kali (in some regions, this creation culminated in Durga).

During these nine days -- which in the Western tradition finds a corresponding resonance in the Catholic tradition of the Novena, or Nine Days of praying to Mary (through the Rosary) -- the Mother's energy is highly available to human beings for blessing, inspiration, and healing.

During the first three days, we connect with Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge & Wisdom. The second three days are dedicated to Maha Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth & Abundance. The final three days of the cycle honor Maha Kali/Durga -- Mother in Her fierce representation, the wife of Shiva, ready and able to play Her role as the Goddess Who Destroys Ignorance, Negativity, & Evil.

The 10th day, Dassara, or Vijaya Dashami, depending which part of India is referring to it, is the culmination of the nine preceding days -- it is on the 10th day when Mother, in Her fierce form, slayed the demon (rakshasa) Mahisasura. Mahisasura had gotten the boon from Shiva that whenever any blood fell from his body onto the ground, a thousand MORE Mahisasuras would spring up from it, ready to fight -- effectively making himself invincible to all the divine forces as individuals. But when they all merged their consciousnesses together, gods and goddesses, angels, rishis, avataras alike, into one peak form of Mother's divine energy -- they created Durga/Kali, who was able to defeat Mahisasura by drinking the blood from his wounds before even a drop could hit the ground!

Mother's victory over the collective forces of negativity and evil, as expressed by Mahisasura, is cause for celebration indeed!

The Dassara day is also highly sacred to our tradition for another reason -- it is the day when Shirdi Sai Baba took his mahasamadhi (his conscious death) from this world in 1918. "Mother is calling, I have to go to Her now..." he said, and breathed his last breath.

This day is an incredibly powerful day to connect with Shirdi Baba's soul energy & receiving blessings, inspiration, and healing from his soul to your soul.

Why Does Spiritual Evolution at times invite Conflict, Kleshas?

The development of conflict in spirituality can be seen a result of progress, don't you think?. Whenever an action is performed it creates an impression, or potential reaction, in the mind. This is called samskara – the distortion of mind waiting for expression. In order to express these samskaras, different experiences (some pleasurable and others painful) will have to be encountered, depending on the samskaras to be expressed. But regardless of whether the experiences are pleasurable or painful, from a spiritual viewpoint they are always desirable because they facilitate the exhaustion of one's samskaras – hence the purification of mind and consequent increased desire for cosmic merger. So obstacles and hardship are considered beneficial on the spiritual path. For the optimal progress, therefore, spiritual practice could be chosen to be combined with the embrace of some worldly clashes and struggles and transmuted into some kind of creativity or even service. It's one form of transmuting conflict into something positive besides inner practice and expands the love one feels into real life.

People often forget that the rise of the kundalini sets off samskaras to be exhausted? What do you think?

How do you embrace the ups and downs with an attitute of total balance and positivity at all times? I honestly have hardly seen any spiritualist in a total balanced state without any fluctuations. Therefore I wonder, what are your methods to surrender the results of your thoughts and deeds, creating the most positive outcome at all times.

Is it not a positive thing to try put one lesson into positive action rather than to hear many lessons and ideas of how one is not evolved enough to handle difficulties?I often hear words such as, he or she does so many years of practice and still has this or that afflictions!" sounds like a familiar judgment call? :-)

I sometimes think that when struggles and conflicts arise in ones life it shows all the more how much we are cared and love dby the Divine Goddess ... or force. What do you think?

Who is The Primordial One?

Dear Friends,

Durga Puja is knocking at the door; just a month more. From the next new moon Devipaksha or the fortnight of The Goddess starts. In India, especially Bengal, people observe this one month in singing devotional songs and performing song-debates to welcome The Mother. This is known as ‘agamani’ or welcome-carols.

Let us start a discussion on The Goddess to welcome Her in our thoughts.

In reference to Saptasati / Sri Sri Chandi / Markendeya Purana / ‘The Durga Bible’, ‘The Three Mysticisms’, the concluding chapter says that out of Nothingness, The Mother Goddess, out of Her Primordial Nature, took three forms of Mahalakshmi, Mahakali, and Mahasaraswati. Mahalakshmi emanated as Brahma and Lakshmi. Mahakali emanated Shankara and Saraswati. Mahasaraswati emanated Vishnu and Chandi. Then Brahma conjugated with Saraswati, Vishnu conjugated with Lakshmi, and Shankara conjugated with Chandi. Brahma and Saraswati created the Cosmic Egg. Shankara and Chandi broke it into pieces, turned to all variety of forms of the universe including all living beings and non-living objects. Vishnu and Lakshmi carry on maintaining them.

But, the second chapter says that Goddess Durga was created out of the energy of all different gods with and under the three great gods Brahma, Vishnu, and Shankara.

A debate goes on between the patriarchal devotees and the matriarchal devotees about the superiority of The Father God and The Mother Goddess;

Who is The Primordial One?

The above two sections of the same text create a contradiction that keeps the debate going on. I would love the friends in this tribe to ponder upon these allegories and bring out their specific judgements with suitable logic and mindfulness. Please let us have the fun of the discussion from various standpoints issued out of various experiences and analogies.

Unhappy Siddhi

--An odd question: Does anyone here have experience working with people who have clairvoyance and/or clairaudience abilities? Or know of someone who does in the SF Bay Area? An extraordinary friend of mine is having emotional troubles digesting her experiences, and is unable to 'turn them off'. She's somewhat like a human Oscar The Cat.

Durga represents the Divine Mother. She is the energy aspect of the Lord. Without Durga, Shiva has no expression and without Shiva, Durga has no existence. Shiva is the soul of Durga; Durga is identical with Shiva. Lord Shiva is only the silent witness. He is motionless, absolutely changeless. He is not affected by the cosmic play. It is Durga who does everything.

Shakti is the omnipotent power of the Lord, or the Cosmic Energy. The Divine Mother is represented as having ten different weapons in Her hands. She sits on a lion. She keeps up the play of the Lord through the three attributes of Nature, namely, Sattwa, Rajas and Tamas. Knowledge, peace, lust, anger, greed, egoism and pride, are all Her forms.

Goddess Durga is a form of Sakti worshiped for her gracious as well as terrifying aspect. Mother of the Universe, she represents the infinite power of the universe and is a symbol of a female dynamism. The manifestation of Goddess Durga is said to emerge from Her formless essence and the two are inseparable.

She is also called by many other names, such as Parvati, Ambika, and Kali. In the form of Parvati, She is known as the divine spouse of Lord Shiva and is the mother of Her two sons, Ganesha and Karttikeya, and daughter Jyoti. Destroyer of demons, she is worshiped during an annual festival called Durga puja,

The Mother's Grace is boundless. Her mercy is illimitable; Her knowledge infinite; Her power immeasurable; Her glory ineffable; and Her splendour indescribable. She gives you material prosperity as well as spiritual freedom.

Approach Her with an open heart. Lay bare your heart to Her with frankness and humility. Be as simple as a child. Kill ruthlessly the enemies of egoism, cunningness, selfishness and contortion. Make a total, unreserved, and ungrudging self-surrender to Her. Sing Her praise. Repeat Her Name. Worship Her with faith and unflinching devotion. Perform special worship on the Navaratri days. Navaratri is the most suitable occasion for doing intense spiritual practices. These nine days are very sacred to the Divine Mother. Plunge yourself in Her worship. Practise intense repetition of the Divine Name, having a regular "quota" of repetitions per day, and the number of hours spent on it.

Sri Rama worshipped Durga at the time of the fight with Ravana, to invoke Her aid in the war. This was on the days preceding the Vijaya Dasami day. He fought and won through Her Grace.

A Glimpse but Not Yet Ready?

Hi All,

I've been absent from this tribe for a while, although not completely because I do check in and read the discussions but I haven't posted here in quite a long time. I found that after a particularly intense experience almost a year ago which pretty much shook me to the core spiritually speaking, I've been in hiding/denial of some kind.

I still haven't been able to completely process the experience and I feel it almost swept me "over the edge" psychologically speaking. It was beautiful, profound, all-consuming and...scary as hell. I've been struggling with not wanting to ever "go there" again.

My spiritual practice has continued, although with some trepidation and not with my former intensity.

Is it unusual to have an experience which pretty much stops one dead in their tracks cowering in fear at where this is taking them? Can a glimpse at something so much greater than onself create fear where once, none existed? For the past year I have felt as though I'm in a holding pattern, not willing to move forward but not wanting to completely abandon the process. Why/what am I resisiting? Where does one go from here?

Whenever righteousness and virtue has been under pressure of demoniac forces, the cosmic mother has overpowered such forces by taking different 'Rupas' (Different supernatural forms or shapes) and saved her devotees. In the beginning of the universe, Maha-Shakti was created out of all supernatural forces (Tejas) of gods united into one. The same later took birth as Maha-Kali, Maha-Laxmi and Maha-Saraswati. All the three 'Rupas' or 'Avatar' represent the human characteristics viz., Raj, Tam and Satva-gun.

In Treta-Yug when Ravana, Kumb-Karan, Khardooshan, Tadka and other demons tormented the virtuous men, the goddess decided to create a divine form for their protection. This gave birth to a beautiful divine girl. The divine girl enquired of Devas, the cause and reason of her birth. The divine forces told her that she had been created to protect Dharma and rekindle spirit of religion. She was asked to go to South India and take birth at the home of Ratnakar Sagar as a girl-child. Girl was named Trikuta. Later the same girl was called Vaishnavi because of her taking birth from Lord Vishnu's lineage. The religion propagated by this goddess girl was called Vaishno-Dharm.

Vaishnavi' means the one who is related to lord "Vishnu''. Goddess Vaishnavi is the manifestation of the collective spiritual strengths of Mata Maha Kali, Mata Maha Lakshmi and Mata Maha Saraswati. It is described in Durga sapatshati that the goddess was born as a young girl of extraordinary beauty and strength, out of the collectively pooled 'Tejas' of various 'Devtas' and three lords Brahma, Vishnu and Shankar. The immediate purpose of the creation of the goddess was the annihilation of Asura (devil) Mahishasura. However another purpose of her creation was that she might usher on earth an era of pious and ascetic life so that the peace could prevail upon the world and she through her penance could rise to higher levels of spirituality and ultimately merge with Vishnu.

The 'Goddess having been created by the Devtas and the three lords ordained the human form in the house of one Ratnakar as his daughter whom the family named as Vaishnavi. The girl right from her childhood displayed a hunger for knowledge which was like a vortex and which no amount of teaching and learning could sufficiently satiate. Subsequently, Vaishnavi started looking into her inner self for knowledge and soon learned the art of meditation and realized that meditation and penance only could bring her close to her greater objective. Vaishnavi thus relinquished all household comforts and went deep into the forest for Tapasaya (meditation).

Meanwhile, Lord Rama, during his fourteen years of exile happened to visit Vaishnavi who recognized him immediately as no ordinary being but the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and immediately asked him to merge her into himself so that she could become one with the supreme creator. However Lord Rama, knowing that it was not the appropriate time, dissuaded her by saying that he will visit her again after the end of his exile and at that time if she succeeded in recognizing him, he will fulfill her wish. True to his words, Rama visited her again after being victorious in the battle, but this time he did so in the guise of an old man. Unfortunately, Vaishnavi was unable to recognize him this time and was distraught. Upon this, Lord Rama consoled her that the appropriate time for her being one with the creator had not come and he will eventually do so in 'Kaliyug' in his incarnation of 'Kalki'. Rama also directed her to meditate and set up an Ashram at the base of Trikuta hills to elevate her level of spirituality so as to bless the mankind and rid the poor and destitute of their sufferings and only then will 'Vishnu' merge her into himself.

Vaishnavi, after immense hardships reached the foot of the Trikuta Hills and after setting up her ashram there she began to meditate. As predicted by Lord Rama, her glory spread far and wide and people began to flock to her Ashram to seek her blessings. As the time passed, a Tantrik named Gorakh Nath who had a vision of the episode between Lord Rama and Vaishnavi in the retrospective time frame, became curious to find out whether Vaishnavi has been able to attain a high level of spirituality or not. He, therefore, sent his most able disciple 'Bhairon Nath' to find out the truth. Bhairon Nath on locating the ashram started observing Vaishnavi secretly and realised that though a 'Sadhvi' she always carried bow and arrows with her and was always surrounded by langoors (apes) and a ferocious looking lion. Bhairon Nath was enamored by Vaishnavi's extraordinary beauty and losing all good sense he began to pester Vaishnavi to marry him. Meanwhile a staunch devotee of Mata Sridhar organised a Bhandara (Community meal) in which the whole village and Guru Gorakh Nath along with all his followers including Bhairon were invited. During the course of Bhandara Bhairon Nath attempted to grab Vaishnavi but she tried her best to daunt him. On failing to do so, Vaishnavi decided to flee away into the mountains to continue her 'Tapasaya' undisturbed. Bhairon Nath however chased her to her destination.

The goddess after halting at Banganga, Charan Paduka, and Adhkwari, finally reached the holy cave Shrine. When Bhairon Nath continued to follow her despite the goddess trying to avoid a confrontation, the goddess was compelled to kill him. Bhairon Nath met his ultimate fate when the goddess, just outside the mouth of the cave, beheaded him. The severed head of Bhairon fell with a force at a distant hilltop. Bhairon Nath upon death realised the futility of his mission and prayed to the deity to forgive him. The almighty 'Mata' had mercy on Bhairon and gave him a boon that every devotee of the goddess shall have to have the Darshans of Bhairon after having the Darshans of the goddess and only then shall the yatra of a devotee be complete. Meanwhile, Vaishnavi decided to shed off her human form and assuming the face of a rock she immersed her self into meditation forever.

Oscar the Cat awakens from his nap, opening a single eye to survey his kingdom. From atop the desk in the doctor's charting area, the cat peers down the two wings of the nursing home's advanced dementia unit. All quiet on the western and eastern fronts. Slowly, he rises and extravagantly stretches his 2-year-old frame, first backward and then forward. He sits up and considers his next move.

In the distance, a resident approaches. It is Mrs. P., who has been living on the dementia unit's third floor for 3 years now. She has long forgotten her family, even though they visit her almost daily. Moderately disheveled after eating her lunch, half of which she now wears on her shirt, Mrs. P. is taking one of her many aimless strolls to nowhere. She glides toward Oscar, pushing her walker and muttering to herself with complete disregard for her surroundings. Perturbed, Oscar watches her carefully and, as she walks by, lets out a gentle hiss, a rattlesnake-like warning that says "leave me alone." She passes him without a glance and continues down the hallway. Oscar is relieved. It is not yet Mrs. P.'s time, and he wants nothing to do with her.

Oscar jumps down off the desk, relieved to be once more alone and in control of his domain. He takes a few moments to drink from his water bowl and grab a quick bite. Satisfied, he enjoys another stretch and sets out on his rounds. Oscar decides to head down the west wing first, along the way sidestepping Mr. S., who is slumped over on a couch in the hallway. With lips slightly pursed, he snores peacefully — perhaps blissfully unaware of where he is now living. Oscar continues down the hallway until he reaches its end and Room 310. The door is closed, so Oscar sits and waits. He has important business here.

Twenty-five minutes later, the door finally opens, and out walks a nurse's aide carrying dirty linens. "Hello, Oscar," she says. "Are you going inside?" Oscar lets her pass, then makes his way into the room, where there are two people. Lying in a corner bed and facing the wall, Mrs. T. is asleep in a fetal position. Her body is thin and wasted from the breast cancer that has been eating away at her organs. She is mildly jaundiced and has not spoken in several days. Sitting next to her is her daughter, who glances up from her novel to warmly greet the visitor. "Hello, Oscar. How are you today?"

Oscar takes no notice of the woman and leaps up onto the bed. He surveys Mrs. T. She is clearly in the terminal phase of illness, and her breathing is labored. Oscar's examination is interrupted by a nurse, who walks in to ask the daughter whether Mrs. T. is uncomfortable and needs more morphine. The daughter shakes her head, and the nurse retreats. Oscar returns to his work. He sniffs the air, gives Mrs. T. one final look, then jumps off the bed and quickly leaves the room. Not today.

Making his way back up the hallway, Oscar arrives at Room 313. The door is open, and he proceeds inside. Mrs. K. is resting peacefully in her bed, her breathing steady but shallow. She is surrounded by photographs of her grandchildren and one from her wedding day. Despite these keepsakes, she is alone. Oscar jumps onto her bed and again sniffs the air. He pauses to consider the situation, and then turns around twice before curling up beside Mrs. K.

One hour passes. Oscar waits. A nurse walks into the room to check on her patient. She pauses to note Oscar's presence. Concerned, she hurriedly leaves the room and returns to her desk. She grabs Mrs. K.'s chart off the medical-records rack and begins to make phone calls.

Within a half hour the family starts to arrive. Chairs are brought into the room, where the relatives begin their vigil. The priest is called to deliver last rites. And still, Oscar has not budged, instead purring and gently nuzzling Mrs. K. A young grandson asks his mother, "What is the cat doing here?" The mother, fighting back tears, tells him, "He is here to help Grandma get to heaven." Thirty minutes later, Mrs. K. takes her last earthly breath. With this, Oscar sits up, looks around, then departs the room so quietly that the grieving family barely notices.

On his way back to the charting area, Oscar passes a plaque mounted on the wall. On it is engraved a commendation from a local hospice agency: "For his compassionate hospice care, this plaque is awarded to Oscar the Cat." Oscar takes a quick drink of water and returns to his desk to curl up for a long rest. His day's work is done. There will be no more deaths today, not in Room 310 or in any other room for that matter. After all, no one dies on the third floor unless Oscar pays a visit and stays awhile.

Note: Since he was adopted by staff members as a kitten, Oscar the Cat has had an uncanny ability to predict when residents are about to die. Thus far, he has presided over the deaths of more than 25 residents on the third floor of Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Providence, Rhode Island. His mere presence at the bedside is viewed by physicians and nursing home staff as an almost absolute indicator of impending death, allowing staff members to adequately notify families. Oscar has also provided companionship to those who would otherwise have died alone. For his work, he is highly regarded by the physicians and staff at Steere House and by the families of the residents whom he serves.

Perhaps the most widely recognized Hindu f estival, Diwali/Deepavali will be celebrated globally this year on November 9. Diwali, or Deepvali, is known as the "Festival of Lights," referring to the rows of earthen lamps celebrants place around their homes. The light symbolizes the victory of knowledge over ignorance, and goodness over evil. It further represents an awareness of God in our lives.

In addition to its symbolic significance, many Hindus believe that Diwali marks the day that Lord Rama returned from a forced exile after defeating the ultimate force of evil in His time. The festival is celebrated over five days throughout India, marking the end of the Hindu calendar year. In addition to Hindus, Sikhs celebrate Diwali in commemoration of the release of the Sixth Guru, Hargobind, from captivity by the Mughal Emperor Jehangir. Jains recognize Diwali as the day Lord Mahavira, the last of the Tirthankaras, attained Nirvana, or liberation, after his death in 527 BCE.

This Bill is in the first step of the legislative process. Introduced Bills must be deliberated and revised within committee before general debate.

Failure

I am thinking alot.
Triggered by a couple of conversations I have had of late.
About failure.

Failure.
Truly the 'f' word -
and it occurs to me, that i have created, for myself and my children, a world without failure; a world where failure is not an option, a world where the word 'failure' just does not exist.

Its an awful word, and i know that i visibly flinch when someone directs it at me.
To imply to yourself or to another that their best efforts have not been good enough- to label someone failure, is to risk scarring another soul for life.

In my life, with my children, there have been times, occasions when attempts at new projects, directions etc have been less than successful.

Is less than successful failure ?
No, no its not.

I ask you to think very carefully before you use the word failure with yourself, your kids or anyone else. Nothing is truly a failure when you look it the big picture. Everything teaches us something, no matter how small and seemingly insignificant. In terms of life lessons and soul progression, it is impossible to have anything other than success because everything will teach you something, even if that something is that you should have done it the other way.

To 'fail' means that there is no longer hope, and in this world, hope is the one thing we are always sure of having.

Many of my friends comment on my children and the apparent ease with which they live their lives. I have been told on many occasions that my children are blessed and in a lot of ways i agree however, they are also two kids who have bought up knowing that their best IS good enough and that if something doesn't work out just the way you wanted it too, it just meant that for now, that something, wasn't meant to happen.

How could anyone brand a child a failure? To do so , is truly child abuse. To brand yourself a failure is soul abuse, beside being very sad.

We have been gifted with free will and with free will, we will always have choice. Choice is part of the gift.
With choice you will always have options but contrary to popular thought, these options are not 'the right way' and 'the wrong way'- they are merely 'one way' or 'another way'.

You can never FAIL by trying- anything you try, you will never fail.
Never.
It may not work out perfect, but it will teach you something for sure.

As humans, we all have our triggers.............that is, we all have those things that make us react rather than act.

I know i do- i can not stand to see an adult yell abuse at a child, i do not use the word failure , i hate seeing spirituality being used as a tool for cruel people:- when someone tells you that 'your energy' is not right for them or their group, they are no better than a school yard bully, in many cases they are worse, because instead of coming out and just saying 'i don't like you' they turn it around and make it your fault that they find you unacceptable..........

One of Joshua's teachers told me once that he was so confident, so sure of himself and his actions, that he stood out amongst other kids his age. I remember telling her that it was because he knew, that basically, he could do no wrong- and i don't mean that to sound egotistical, merely just fact, he, like his sister knew, that no matter what they did, one way or another they would learn something from it.

That was something that was missing with a lot of the kids the same age as my kids- self confidence bought about by fear of failure.

If you take away the failure, a child has nothing to fear.

Words have such power, such longevity.

Please use them wisely.

I am off to make piklets for my witches.

I am housebound, carless, mobilephone less too ( bloody thing !- not a failure just very much less than perfect).
I have a ruptured abcess- yes, another one !!
and a pimple
yet i am talking with my Goddess
and She tells me, that i am all right.

I may not be me or her or she, but I am Lisa, and that is good enough.

Be nice to your children- they are your mirror.

My god, she was so flaming hot I had to strip down naked, roll in the reeking mud like a wild hog to staycool, until even the fetid bog dried up and turned to graveyard dust. I then felt compelled to give up the proverbial ghost, leaving my bones to bleach white in the scorching heat of the Great Mother's alchemical furnace. What sort of cake would she bake next? What tasty stew would her cauldron brew? Only the thermophiles knew a sure future. For all the rest of flesh the chances for sustainable survival were not much more than a beggar's zilch as the temperatures climbed and the surface sparked, ignited, quickly combusting, leaving behind blackened charcoal, gray ash, and a thickening atmosphere filled with poisonous heat trapping CO2.

Purification by fire the Hopi prophesized and sure as shootin' they weren't just tootin' the horns of street corner apocalypse. This is the real thing. Turn on the air conditioner, fire up another power plant to handle the load, dump tons of CO2 into the atmosphere raising the temperature some more so we have to turn up the air conditioner, which requires higher output from the power plant, which spews more CO2 in a vicious circle spiraling out of quasi-human control. Ah, for the life of a mole …

We might have done better to leave well enough alone and maybe learn to build homes underground and gardens on top. But no, we aspired to bend the Great Mother to our will and testament, harness her to the wagon of industry, and make huge raping profits off the spoils of biosphere exploitation. What an artificial nation! Take a vacation and see her fading beauty before she dries up shriveled into the "hag at the crossroads" where we sit like poisonous toads dumping our loads before expiring along with the water hole. The deepest wells were finally sucked dry. We doomed ourselves while blaming everything and everyone else for our errors.

Do you dream reality? Does reality dream you? There is no actual escape. Fantasy departs when the grid goes down and we are left in the dark fending for ourselves. The whole city is a ghetto and much of the countryside is either owned and operated by fast food corporations and paved suburban malls or is another dried up gene modified mega farm powered by the self-consumption of biofuels, fed on the byproducts of dwindling crude oil. Where are the backyard organic gardens? Is there a backyard to garden and, if so, why aren't we busy replacing the well mowed lawns?

My videogame cell phone oracle has no sane answers. Answers are for sissies. We're planning on toughing and bluffing our way through the blistering reality straight into the lake of fire, stopping to roll like hogs in the mire before we expire and are discarded like burnt black toast. We call it the Great Mother's Roast which reminds the dead church of it's dark history of witch and faggot burning. Who needs midwives, herbal healers, and sane people of nature when there are cities to build, a population to control, and a Book of Revelation to fulfill? Sell them the swill. Give the masses bread and circuses
and wars of terror to entertain and consume a portion of the expendable overpopulation. Salute your damned nation. Remain at your appointed station.

Whatever you do you may not combine talents and resources for mutual aid and support. If you do there will be a secret report and horned lord cattle roundup when the Burning Bush decrees another divinely inspired God-directed attack. There is a glowing gourd of ashes out back. The Beast 666 sees no lack of opportunity for unleashing the solar current directly on already scarred skin, pretending it is not a sin to plunder, tear asunder, and cleave the Priestess on the rack. We are so far gone now that there is no turning back. We might as well get our kicks in before the whole shithouse goes up in fact. How is that for tact? No need for sugar coating the truth when the fundamental theocracy steals the votes before the peasants get to the booth. We need conversion surfaces rather than converting churches. This diatribe of the dark future is being typed on a solar electric powered computer as the solar electrified fans blows the cooler evening air over my bare skin, a lesser sin against nature, something she might be able to live with. Imagine a surface which both shades the body from the sunlight's harsh glare and turns that glare into pollutionless free electricity. Now we're getting somewhere that the oilmen of god don't want you to know about. Too late. The cat is out of the bag and it's not about to go back.

this beautiful statement from a Native American woman practicing the traditional ways came up in another spiritual discussion group and I wanted to share it here. the context was a Hare Krishna, an Indian man from India, was asking this Native lady about her beliefs and practices, and is there a governing belief in one god in her tradition.... she wrote:

"Nowadays, you will hear some native Iroquois speak of a "Great Spirit" but they are by and large Christianized. One almighty god does not work in traditional Iroquois mindset as we work in a balance between twos: sky/earth, man/woman, youth/elder. If you have only one of something, there is no balance."

Jeremy Irons lends support to prison yoga program

Actor Jeremy Irons says his work as an actor enabled him to connect with the prisoners he wants to help as part of a program that encourages inmates to meditate and practice yoga.

“I live on the edge,” Irons told CTV's Canada AM. “I play characters who live on the edge and I like that. I'm very aware that it's a very thin line between being inside jail and being outside jail.”

The actor is involved in Freeing the Human Spirit, a program that helps prisoners deal with their anger and stay out of jail through the practice of yoga and meditation.

Irons – who has won an Oscar, an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Tony – became involved with the program through 83-year-old Moncton, N.B.-born Catholic nun and Zen master Elaine MacInnes.

MacInnes has been teaching meditation to prisoners since 1980. She received the Order of Canada in 1999 for her work in the area.

According to The Globe and Mail, Irons met MacInnes while she was living in England in the mid-nineties while he was taking one of her Zen classes.

“She's an extraordinary woman,” Irons told The Globe. “Sadly, she's now 80-something, although you wouldn't know it.

“I wish she was 30-something because she has so much to give to life. I've only met four or five amazing people in my life, and she is one.”

Irons has been involved as a hands-on participant with the Freeing the Human Spirit program for the past 12 years. The Freeing the Human Spirit organization and some prisons are located near his Oxford home.

“The idea is not only to help prisoners while they're in prison, but to prepare them for when they get out,” Irons told Canada AM. “Because when they get out, they haven't got a house, they haven't got a job, their wife's probably left them.

“It's tough and unless you've got some sort of calm and centre for yourself, it's really difficult not to reoffend and go back in. So, it seemed to me to be a fantastic organization.”

The program has been running in Canada for around four years, according to Irons. It is accepted in 27 prisons in the country and is currently being practiced in 14 correctional facilities. The program can make a genuine difference in the lives of the incarcerated, Irons said.

“When you're banged up in prison, as Paris (Hilton) will find out, I suppose, you're stuck in a cell on your own, a very negative experience,” Irons told Canada AM. “But if you can turn that cell into an ashram, if you can learn to meditate and do yoga, exercise your mind and exercise your body – then it becomes a positive experience.”

Its late and i am awake.
Wide awake and scouring the net in between games of spider solitaire that I just cant seem to win to night.
Tomorrow is huge and as is often the case for me, my concern about tomorrow has rendered me sleepless tonight.
And so I sit
and think about stuff, that probably wouldn't be on my mind if my mind wasn't so over tired and adrenalised that it is searching for stuff to mull over.
I've read some blogs but tonight, the sadness contained in many of them is too much for me and i find myself asking 'why?'- why are so many so unhappy ?
I don't have answers
All i have is faith and for me, faith is enough. Many though don't find faith as easy as I do, and so, i see , that their paths are filled with hardship, pain and misery. From the outside, it is so simple to see, but from the inner depths of anguish, I remember too being unable to see clearly the light ahead.

People ask me about my health, about my speech, about my breakdown and I tell them as honestly as i can about how i have perceived the last 8 months of my life.
The most terrifying time of all for me was the questioning of my faith, was the time when unable to grasp a glimmer of light, I wondered, 'is this all in my head? have I made this all up?'
I spent days trawling through my own spiritual writings trying to find a thread to lead me to an answer that would say 'this is real, this is true' and you know what? even now, to this day, I still have not found that thread, more realistically, my need to find the thread vanished as my faith in the Divine was replenished.

A good friend of mine once told me that 'faith is belief without proof' and in the early days of my darkness, his words were very truly the raft that kept the life of Lisa afloat. When all is shattered and fragmented around you and life makes no sense, although you crave proof, tangible,real proof, substance to your life, more often than not, you are not meant to find it or better still, it is meant to find you and at a time and a place when you least expect it.

I thought that I had lost my faith- for a while there in the deepest, darkest moments of my life, I thought that I had lost my faith. What I didn't know then, was that it wasn't the act of having faith that I had lost, it was the act of accepting without proof; needing to have my world, thoughts, beliefs put into something tangible, that i could touch, hold,reassure myself with became my idea of faith- 'if you are there, PROVE it to me' and because it didn't,couldn't, i stumbled, i doubted .

Reading the blogs tonight, I find my own living in the words of so many others. So many searching for something, anything that proves to them that they are valuable, real, true and i wonder, do they know , that faith requires trust and belief, even when the blackest night falls, faith requires belief without proof.

I remember the fear of feeling 'alone' and that is the only way I can describe my time of doubting faith- 'alone'.
To feel that there is nothing , no where, no reason, no purpose , was the most alone feeling I have ever experienced in my life. Even now, my stomach drops at the memory , and I cant imagine how it must be to live every day of your life like that, looking for something that you cant ever find, until you stop looking and just trust.

There was a reason I got so sick, I'm not still particularly clear about it except to know that it had purpose and reason.
There is a reason I am having issues with my speech, alot of it has to do with shutting up and listening but more so there are changes in my life that could never have come about any other way.

I look back now, at the darkness of illness and i see a Universe that pulled out all the necessary stops to make me stop, look and listen.
I don't question the hows, whys, wheres of it all, I merely accept that what is right for me will be.

There is a peace in that.
There is a peace in knowing that all is exactly how it is meant to be.
There is peace in my mind, in my heart and in my soul.

I believe in me and I believe in my faith, the power of my faith.
I cant prove it, i don't want to.
It just is and because of that, I continue to grow, thrive and live.

Faith is the key.
All else will fall into place.

she touches and unfolds me.......
her light, with mine, is perfect, strong and pure
her light, like mine, connected to source, attached in all ferocity to the powers that be
and so she calls

hard, real yet soft and sure
'step up, be the woman, the person, the soul, be my child on earth...........
step up and rejoice in the radiance that is you, and you alone,
allow yourself this challenge, this growth, without doubt, without fear.....

She requires no answer, no affirmation of yes or no
the mingled light that is Her, is me, Is our connection alighned in a brightness
too real to be ignored.
the intertwining light, the pulse of life that connects
her to me

she calls me and I move forward
she calls me and i respond with automatic response......
I am YOU
You are me
We are Her, She that is all
she is all
all
She calls me.........
'step up, step up to the dance'
and so it goes.......
and so it goes.......

what does faith mean to you? do you have it? not have it? wish you had it?

is it a blind following of some spiritual idea or path? is it a sublime inner knowing?

Meditating on one's Enlightened Self

Folks--

--The other day, I was talking to a friend of mine about religion, gods and goddesses, and how in some forms of yoga one meditates on a certain Deva (or Devas) seeking their guidance or to align oneself with their energy.

--It is also very common to invoke the presence of elightened mahasiddas (yogis) for their guidance.

--Call me crazy, but it occured to me that in a universe of unlimited possibilities, infinite universes, there must be a completely enlightened 'version' of myself out there.

--Would it be silly of me to meditate on my enlightened self, and ask for his guidance?
