Hey Alx,
Dispensationalism is probably the dominant theology in the new non-denominational mega-churches, like my dad's. They are VERY into the "last days" and "the rapture" and all of that. The "Left Behind" books are based on it. The sanctuary does not even have a Cross - there is a pulpit, and on it is The Book. Everyone brings a Bible to Church - on Sunday mornings you see this vast sea of people, for blocks on end, converging on the church, Bibles in hand. They are Fundamentalists - the Bible is infallible, and literally true, every word, in the plain sense of the text - no fancy "scholarship" stuff allowed! And the sermons are like a class, in which they study a bit of Scripture, with every singe person following along.

Many...interesting...consequences of this theology. I already mentioned the scorn of environmentalism, or concern for animal welfare. All that matters is the human, Christian souls - and they're like, outta here anyways, sometime Soon. Because of the emphasis on Paul, they are deeply patriarchal. Only men can be pastors, or hold any position of authority in the Church. A woman's place is to submissive to her husband, who is "Lord of the household, as Christ is Lord of the Church". And the State of Israel exists by God's commandment, though, unfortunately for the Jews, they will be Left Behind at the rapture. In the new Dispensation, the *Gentiles* are God's people, and America, as the center of "correct theology", has the Divine mandate to lead the world. Hence, the tie-in with the Religious Right. The Iraq war, as Sarah Palin says, is God's will, and at home the faithful are called to the "culture war" against gay marriage, abortion, "liberalism", and so on. And of course, only Christianity and Judaism are valid faiths - all other religions are false, and of the Devil.

My dad's getting old, but he's not stupid. He can read the Bible in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. He has shelves and shelves of "correct theology" books, and unlike Palin, he does read the newspaper. But the narrowing effect on his mind is pretty evident to me. I used to be able to talk to this guy. He could see other points of view, he watched PBS, and registered Independent. That's all gone now - there's only One Way, and every conversation comes down to "believe or burn". Its even weirder with my mom, who as I have said is a mystic at heart. She used to do hatha yoga, she wore a peace sign around her neck, and listened to Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. She voted Democratic, supported the Sierra Club, and took food and clothing to the Mexican orphanages. She was a Christian, but felt that God would "save everyone somehow". She struggled with doubts, and read "liberal" theologians like Paul Tillich. Now her eyes are kind of glazed, and she rants about the "end times". For all the Fundamentalist fervor, she seems hollow and empty to me.

They both think I am under demonic influence. They took me to their pastor, who told me I needed to be exorcised, after first renouncing Yoga and Eastern religions as "works of the Devil". Needless to say, I couldn't do that. I really don't know what to do anymore, except smile and nod and try to change the subject. There seems to be no way to convey that I have my own spirituality, that I pray and meditate daily, and that my beliefs are at least as considered and sincere as their own. I find it very hard to have any respect for Fundamentalism. It seems to be such an incredibly negative force in the world, the source of so much violence and strife. And its taken my family from me - not just my parents, but my siblings as well. I know first-hand what Sarah Palin's "base" is like, and its scary stuff to me.

wow, Torrey --

we seem to come from something similar in background. my dad was a surgeon, and a man of science and reason. and super well-read and of course philosophy. he adored Russell, and was quite a Schopenhauer & Spinoza guy. he really was of the same mind about life and death. "when you're dead, you're dead, and that's it." *grinning*

he raised me that way (my mom died when I was nine, and she was the more intuitive, mystical kind) -- but the joke was that I had to go to Catholic school because it was the better of the two schools in our small Missouri town. there began my real spiritual education -- trying to come to terms with what Jesus did on the cross, and why. but it was funny in my anti-organized-religion household.

what I did learn about my dad was that he was deeply 'spiritual' and humane -- really a dogged guy for dharma, 40 years working in a small town as a surgeon who would get up at 3:00 a.m. and fix up 6 people from a car crash where no one had insurance and he wasn't going to get paid..... -- he found his relief in music and nature. he would cry listening to Beethoven or Brahms symphonies, or looking at old trees in a forest.

in terms of religion, he considered himself agnostic because he couldn't prove there was or wasn't a god, logically. *grinning again* (as if the natural world itself ISN'T evidence of god.......?)

but, unlike your dad, no conversion of any kind, no wake-up call from Jesus or any other divine character...

and, well, wow, that your dad went from a total atheist/cynic to the most intense born-again kind of Christian.

I never heard about the Dispensationalist dogma before -- is this prevalent in mega-churches? pretty interesting. for god-sakes, that PAUL would be taken as the authority of Jesus' message!???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *rolling my eyes*

are they Rapturists? seems like yes, based on the end of your write-up.

how do you relate to your dad these days? I mean, do you talk -- what does he think of you and your version of life? really interesting.

Alx,
Dad was a man of science, while I was growing up. A skeptic, an atheist. He tried to teach me the calculus almost before I could read, and gave me books of Plato, Emerson, Bertrand Russell. He told me, "I've seen so many people die. And that's all there is. Lights out." I was completely surprised when he converted to "born-again" Fundamentalist Christianity in his 50's. (I'm getting to be that age - gulp!) My mother was raised in it, but she was "backslidden" as they say, having married an unbeliever. She's a bit of a mystic, really - she has visions, where Jesus talks to her, and she has healed by "laying on of hands" many serious conditions, including cancer.

My Dad is pretty rigidly in the Fundamentalist worldview these days. His Church is one of those non-denominational mega-Churches, with a "Dispensationalist" theology. Basically, this means that they believe the Gospels were for the early Jewish followers - the Gentiles are to be guided primarily by the Letters of Paul. A Bad Thing in my book, as Paul (a celibate after his conversion) was deeply misogynistic and patriarchal. I'm pretty sympathetic to Christianity. If I go to Mass (Catholic, Episcopal, Orthodox) I can feel the presence of the sacred. Jesus, through the Gospels (including the Gnostic ones) has always spoken to my heart. But the Fundamentalist thing scares me, especially since the Reagan era made them the base of the Republican party. Just like any Islamic Jihadist, these folks welcome martyrdom. And believe with absolute faith in a worldview that is completely archaic and irrational, one where environmental protection is meaningless because "the End is near", and where gay people, adherents of other religions, and ANYONE who doesn't accept their version of reality is doomed to burn in Hell for all Eternity.

yah, so deleted. tribe's really been glitchy.

Charlie Lutes was a special guy -- he had a deep connection to the cosmic. my husband knew him in the old TM days -- he was something of a legend among TM folks, a kind of off-the-wall moving-to-the-beat-of-his-own-drummer kinda guy.

the end of the tale falls down for me, though, when the recipient of the healing is singing the praises of the individual he thinks healed him -- god is the only healer, ever. it's not that this one or that one is so special -- it's the divine energy coming through them that is powerful, and beautiful, and all-capable. (Charlie got his channels from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, and his master Brahmananda Saraswati, and his whole lineage of masters going back to the origin of masters. that's part of how the miracle energy operates.)

Torrey -- that's a powerful tale! your dad was a physician? so was mine! but mine was old skeptic school, didn't believe in god or the supernatural, didn't have prayer as an option, etc. what kind of cleric did your dad become? is he still?

A remarkable story, for sure. My dad had severe cardiomyopathy, a serious heart condition. He was a physician, and realized that he was dying - he had put his affairs in order, and was waiting for the end. There was no medical treatment that could help him. Then he prayed, and asked God to heal him if his life could serve some higher purpose. Within a few days, the symptoms began to ease, and when he went back for a check-up, the cardiologist could not believe the results - a complete remission of the cardiomyopathy. He simply says, "God healed me". It changed his life - although already retired, he went back to school, to seminary, and found a second calling in his old age as a minister in the local church.

We're so hypnotized by our collective consciousness of what is possible, that we don't realize that miracles still happen, every day.

hi, Tanemon,

yes, I think I do know what you're asking.

from my lengthy experience in both -- I spent a few years as an active Reiki practitioner and master, before spending nearly ten years in the tradition I'm involved in now -- I can say that the divine energy is always the divine energy, so in that respect all healing systems and energies are of a similar 'kind.'

chi is chi -- universal energy is universal energy -- prana is prana. they're really all words for the same thing.

but the healing I practice now is much more specific, for one thing -- drawing on individual energy channels involving the Five Elements of nature, for example (earth, fire, sky, water and air) for different healing needs or results, drawing on particular doorways into the cosmic for different kinds of healing energy to flow.

I guess the metaphor is having the deluxe box of crayons to choose from, all the nuances and shades of color, rather than a small box of crayons that only has eight standard colors. (since the different Reiki symbols are also drawing on different energy 'channels', or doorways, in the energy.)

the outcome, too, is different -- the healing energies and doorways in the tradition I am linked with now leads to direct experience of god and enlightenment channels. I do think Dr. Yusui had a kind of enlightenment, through cognizing and bringing in the Reiki symbols and energy forms -- but I wouldn't say he had the total enlightenment that's possible on this planet at this time.

so, that's a kind of difference, too.

also, I've never heard of a Reiki healer manifesting physical objects out of thin air -- or transforming one item into another, like water to wine, so that's a substantial difference as well. in order to apply the miracles, one has to really understand the depth of the illusion of this planet, the souls, the life and death, and the breadth of the god energy behind the illusion operating in and through our physical world.

I haven't seen that Reiki leads to that understanding in any comprehensive way -- and I really was a dedicated Reiki healer/master.

so, that's my experience. I wonder if this answers your question at all.

Alx... Do you feel (or think or know) that the difference between, say, Reiki energy and the kind of forcefully competent & specific healing in the lineage you're involved with is a difference in degree or a difference in kind? Know what I'm asking?

spreading out all over the world -- Europe, Japan, America, Australia. I've heard my teacher say that every city needs something like 30 saints with these kinds of healing capabilities, to really help address the imbalances in our world today, to help the souls wake up and to relieve the intense suffering of this time.

I know already there are many folks in my tradition in North Carolina, in New York City, in Cinncinatti, Seattle, and other very much not 'new-age' places. different places in Canada, too, including Edmonton.

pretty wild and interesting!

Do you think this new group of healers will spread out, geographically - or be physically located in a small number of currently "new-age" hotbeds?

(Either way, it's something to look forward to!)

Great story. Alx. I was recently asked to open my bag at the airport because they saw something suspicious...my tibetan tantric knife! But due to some strings being pulled by my Kalki Bhagavan Mahapurusha, I just told them it was a "ritual knife". and they just let me go. Sometimes i underestimate how far God's influence is. This knife, when stuck into the ground upsidewn causes the sun to come out so it is no ordinary knife! And after they played with it, they just smiled.

hi, Tanemon --

I think we're all about to see an emergence of many beautiful healers with that kind of unshakable confidence. this seems to be part of the divine's plan for re-establishing an awareness, humanity-wide, of the divine energy and the beauty that underlies this creation.

That IS a wonderful story.

I've known very few 'healers' (i.e., people trained in energetic-healing arts) who have the confidence to do something like that. VERY few.

hi, Tanemon --

I just heard a great tale from a friend, who was coming back from India, and on the flight there was a huge panic, the flight attendants came running and freaking out, asking if there was a doctor in the plane -- and suddenly my friend, a young woman who's spent serious time in India, realized she had to volunteer to help, even though she's not a Western physician.

she threw her hand up, thinking, "well, I've trained to become a soul doctor! I can help!" not knowing at all what kind of situation it was....! and the attendants swept her along to the front of the plane where a youngish child was screaming in its mother's arms and coughing up blood. a whole group of extremely worried attendants were gathered around, not knowing what to do.

my friend mentioned to them, "I'm not an M.D., but I AM a healer." they were so relieved someone had come to help, they just nodded.

my friend started her meditation techniques, throwing her intention on the divine lineage that we're connected to, and started to help the child.

within fifteen minutes, the child was calm and peaceful, the spitting up blood had stopped. neither the child nor the mother spoke English, and one of the flight attendants asked how the child was doing, and the mother responded that the kid was feeling much, much better.

she went back to her seat, and said for the whole rest of the flight, the attendants were smiling at her, giving her extra stuff, thanking her every time they walked by her. they offered her special perqs for the next flight on the airline, by way of thanking her for the intervention -- but she refused it, saying that god did the healing and she didn't expect any kind of particular special treatment.

the blessing, the moksha, the gratitude flowing to her from the people after doing the healing was a beautiful reflection of how much of a yoga, a category of divine union, healing really is.

so -- that's one miracle that I've heard of since we all made this incredible trip to India. there are many others, but this one stands out for its urgency and amazing resolution.
