What does the term sankalpa mean when put in the context of an avatar. What does it mean when an avatar or mahatma tells you that he/she will make a sankalpa for you? Does it mean that he/she will change your karma? That's what I understand.
I was in a situation 4 months ago and asked such an avatar, stupid me didn't realize that She said She's make a sankalpa for me until 2 days ago....She actually said sankalpa, but my mind couldn't accept it...don't ask me why, I don't know, my mind does funny things in front of my guru. Funny thing is the situation is now a moot point. I don't expect anyone to have the answer to this, but I'm putting it out there in hopes of learning something.

Re: Sankalpa
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 4:25 AMWhat actually happened was that I asked the avatar about my situation, the She said sankalpa, then the swami next to Her said that She'd make a sankalpa. I must have looked puzzled because the the swami said that She'd pray for me. I guess he thought I wouldn't understand the meaning of sankalpa, but at the time I understood it as divine resolve. Over the weekend I spent some time with a long time devotee of my guru, Ammachi, who has been to India mnay times. I asked him what it means when She says she'll pray for you, and he said that it means that She will make a sankalpa...so here I am back at the same point.

yes, 'sankalpa' or 'sankalpam' means 'divine intention'. if a saint is putting their sankalpam on you, it means they're putting your situation in a particular direction, one that it may not otherwise have been permitted to go.
I've seen my master put a sankalpam, for example, on someone to come to India to study deeply (when it wasn't their conscious intention), to leave a bad vaastu home (which otherwise would kill them in the short run) even though a person is super-attached to the house, and for people to win a spiritual process when it was otherwise a little iffy for them personally.
but sankalpam doesn't only pertain to people, it pertains to situations, to creating, with divine will, something.
currently my husband and I have a strong sankalpam to find a place where we can start a spiritual center near our home. for instance.
you can strengthen your sankalpam -- which is powered by how much austerities (meditation) power your soul is carrying, in union with the divine will -- by breaking a coconut (a brown one), hard, in one stroke, if possible, just after making your sankalpam internally.
releasing a coconut like that -- it's the symbol of the human head/egoism, on one hand, but also all five elements of nature are there, the water, the earth, the fire (sun that grew the coconut), the air inside, etc. -- is like breaking the grip of the five elements and getting your intention through the ethers like a lightning bolt.

Re: Sankalpa
Mon, March 31, 2008 - 1:51 PMThanks alot Alx for you wisdom. It helps to understand this sankalpa. I nearly freaked out when I realized what had actually happened, there's so much I don't understand about Indian customs and philosophy. I didn't realize that She was putting Her divine resolve around my situation, I just thought She was blowing me off....God how ignorant of me! One can never judge the outside appearances of a guru nor their intentions.
I have to mention though that after I had asked Her my question and even though I misunderstood what had actually happened (or maybe just didn't dare to believe it), my body and mind had pulsed with energy and happiness for no apparent reason. Is it true that maybe we understand things on an unconcious "soul level", that even if our minds don't get it, we still benefit?

I was told once by another devotee of Ammachi, that when you ask Her a question, then you allow Her to direct your life. It's like you open up the channel in which She can work on you. What you've written kind of resembles this. Thanks again :) -

"Is it true that maybe we understand things on an unconcious "soul level", that even if our minds don't get it, we still benefit?"
of course! jeez louise, if we were waiting to understand spirituality with our minds alone -- it'd be a LONG wait.
I think it's true that ESPECIALLY if the mind doesn't get it, we benefit.
the soul and the mind are like arch-enemies in terms of spirituality. the mind keeps struggling to believe that it's in control of the whole system, and that the soul should bend to the mind's ideas and desires and restless silliness. there's the nature of suffering, for you.
fortunately, the soul has its own track. when the mind is down, like when we're asleep, or foggy, tired, or worn out -- or meditating, hopefully! -- then the soul is UP and accessible. much more accessible than when the mind is in full form, chattering away and trying to guide everything in a stupid fashion.
and I have to say -- being around the avatars means that your mind is often confused. the divine energy, the soul power of a character like that automatically starts purifying your system if you're around them -- so the soul is more accessible, and is receiving all kinds of blessing and benefits, healing and messages that the mind isn't even remotely clued in to.
this is a good thing. *grinning*
and, yes, you're opening a channel between yourself and her -- so that she can work on your soul. once you put yourself into the hands of a guru, any guru, they're taking care of your life. they're doing the work to help purify your system, including the soul, so that you can see more and more of the divinity that is you, and operate more from that clear understanding.
hope this helps!

Tue, April 1, 2008 - 5:23 AMThat's great Alx, thanks :)
"and I have to say -- being around the avatars means that your mind is often confused. the divine energy, the soul power of a character like that automatically starts purifying your system if you're around them"
hehe, also around this particular avatar, one tends to not get sleep...maybe 2-4 hours a night. I think She loves that. The best stuff happens usually around 4am, it's beautiful.
I have to add that I've never felt more intense ego death than when I'm around Her. What I mean is sometimes I experience immense mental and emotional pain and anxiety like i just want to die, I've never experienced this before I met Her....wow. I realize that it's all a cleansing process, that we have to feel these emotions and sensations so that we can let them go, or that we can let the idea of us, me and mine go.
She's a little tough on me, but I asked for it before I met Her. I wrote down on a sheet of paper 3 days before I met her in 2006 to ask Her to help me see with the eyes of God. When She first saw me She glared at me with squinted eyes for a pretty long time while She was giving darshan to others. Sometimes I wonder if that was any indication of how intense my relationship with Her was going to be.
